Holly Springs nabbed its first conference title in school history, partly thanks to some bad weather.

Two days of rain Tuesday and Wednesday forced the Southwest Wake Athletic Conference to cancel its traditional 18-hole, end-of-year event. When the tournament washed away, the regular season standings became final.

The Golden Hawks edged Green Hope 60-58.

Player of the year and all-conference honors, which are determined by strokes-per-nine-holes average, were also cemented.

Fuquay-Varina’s Catherine Ashworth, a senior who will play at East Carolina next year, was the SWAC player of the year. Ashworth, who won the same honor as a freshman, averaged 34.8 strokes per nine holes.

She was joined on the first team all-conference list by: Athens Drive freshman Jennifer Chang (35.3), Green Hope senior Meghan Symonds (38.3), Holly Springs sophomore Natalie Peterson (38.7), Apex senior Maria Cassas and Green Hope senior Amanda Yannoni (41) and sophomore Riley Thomas (41).

Second-team all-conference was: Holly Springs seniors Courtney Normand (41.2) and Abby Snidemiller (41.3), Apex junior Kaley Barts (43.7), Holly Springs senior Jordan Marshall (43.7) and Panther Creek junior Maggie Basile (44.2).

All players who averaged 50 strokers or fewer will play Monday in the 4A East regional at UNC’s Finley Golf Club.

Ashworth won the 4A East regional title as a sophomore.
