Notebook: Cary grad Bagherpour wins award

Samantha Bagherpour, a 2013 Cary High graduate, made the final penalty kick to helped Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Va., win a NCAA Division III women’s soccer national championship on Dec. 6 in Kansas City, Mo.

Lynchburg (27-0) defeated Williams College from Williamstown, Mass., after a scoreless double overtime.

Bagherpour earlier had won the tournament’s NCAA Elite 89 Award for academic excellence. The NCAA gives the award to the athlete with the highest overall grade point average at each of its 89 championships.

Gibbons in top 25: The Cardinal Gibbons High girls’ volleyball team is ranked No. 22 in the final MaxPreps Xcellent 50 rankings. The Crusaders finished 27-0 and won the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A championship.

Charlotte Country Day, which finished 44-1, is ranked No. 15.

Ress takes 20th: Justin Ress of Cary High finished 20th in the 400 individual medley in the USA National Swimming Champions in Greensboro. Ress, who swims for the Marlins of Raleigh, posted a 3:53.32.

He also helped the Marlins’ 800 free relay swim a 6:46.66 and finish 16th.

Conference cup leaders: The N.C. High School Athletic Association has released its Wells Fargo Conference Cup standings after the fall sports season. The Conference Cup is given to the school with the top overall athletics program based on points earned by conference finish. Each conference sets its own method of scoring points.

In the Southwest Wake Athletic 4A Conference, Green Hope (52.5 points) leads followed by Panther Creek and Apex (tied with 39). Middle Creek (31), Holly Springs (29.5), Fuquay-Varina (27.5), Athens Drive (17.5) and Cary (16) round out the rest.

Cardinal Gibbons has a four-point lead over Chapel Hill in the Big Eight 3A Conference.

Research Triangle sits in fifth place of the North Central Athletic 1A Conference, 12 points back of Raleigh Charter.

State cup: Currently in its last season of 3A play, Cardinal Gibbons has a massive lead in the NCHSAA Wells Fargo State Cup standings 335-225 over second-place Weddington. Green Hope trails Broughton for first in 4A, 190-187.5, with Panther Creek (132.5) in sixth.

State cup points are awarded based on postseason finish.

Avery to Cornell: Cary Academy senior Jonathan Avery, a three-time N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association champion sprinter, has committed to Cornell. Avery won the 100 and 200 in last year’s 3A state meet and claimed the 100 as a sophomore as well.
