A double-digit deficit with just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter? Not a problem for Green Hope.
The Falcons got a Trevor Losito 23-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 25 seconds remaining to pull out a 32-31 victory over Sanderson in a nonconference football game on Friday night.
Sanderson (1-3) led 31-20 after Geoma Ward scored on a 12-yard TD run with 7:06 remaining, but Green Hope (3-2) immediately answered when Tucker Burkinshaw tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Dixon with 5:48 left to draw within 31-26.
After Sanderson turned the ball over on downs with 3:13 at the Green Hope 37, the Falcons needed just three plays to get the game-winner. Burkinshaw connected on a 32-yard pass to Losito, and two plays later, Losito squirted through a hole and juked a couple of defenders on his way for the winning TD.
Burkinshaw completed 17 of 23 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted once.
Unlikely hero for Apex
Duke Fruehauf’s second career pass completion was a memorable one. After Apex starter Grayson Boyd was injured in overtime against Cary on Friday, the sophomore Fruehauf entered the game on a second down from the Cary 5-yard line and a chance to win the game.
On third down, Fruahauf, who had completed just one of three throws in his brief career, found Ian Boyd in the back corner of the end zone for the win 37-34 overtime win – and on homecoming night to boot.

Diamante Taylor, Panther Creek: Three touchdowns in three different ways – a 61-yard interception return, a 78-yard kickoff return, after a tricky handoff from Justin Smalls, and a 91-yard pass. He ended with three catches for 121 yards.

Play of the week
Fruehauf’s pass to Boyd to claim Apex’s win.
They said it
“I knew we had to score, we had to drive the field and make plays all around at every position,” Green Hope QB Tucker Burkinshaw said. “This gives us a lot of momentum.”
▪ The “Battle of the Creeks” brought out the best of high school football as Middle Creek and Panther Creek drew an overflow crowd of 4,500-plus Friday night at the Catamounts’ stadium.
▪ Kickers don’t often get a chance to shine, but they did in Apex’s 37-34 overtime win against Cary. Apex’s Nate Davis and Cary’s Quinn Dunphy combined for a perfect 5 of 5 on field goals and 6 of 6 on extra points.
