Orange County sheriff’s investigators charged a father and his son Tuesday with the 2007 beating death of an Efland resident.
Jerry Wayne Sawyers, 67, and Christopher Ray Sawyers, 29, were charged with first-degree murder and are being held without bail in the Orange County Jail, Sheriff Charles Blackwood said.
They are accused of killing Charles Sidney Lloyd, 47, at an Efland home on Sept. 24, 2007. Investigators said at the time that the person with whom Lloyd had been staying on Bushy Cook Road called 911 early that morning after waking up and seeing Lloyd had been injured.
Lloyd died of blunt force trauma to the head shortly after arriving at UNC Hospitals, investigators said.
His mother, Carolyn Lloyd, was interviewed after her son’s death. Lloyd had three children in his parents’ custody, Carolyn Lloyd said, and had been stopping by once or twice a week to spend time with his teenage son. He also was doing odd jobs around the house, she said.
Court records showed Lloyd also had a criminal history that included some felony drug charges. Carolyn Lloyd said her son had made poor choices but that people who knew him said he was a nice guy.
The investigation eventually stalled, investigators said, but the case remained open. New information that surfaced last fall led them to previously undiscovered evidence and, later, to the Sawyers family, Blackwood said.
Christopher Sawyers has multiple convictions since 2008 for breaking and entering, larceny and assault in Alamance and Orange counties, according to state corrections records. He was released from prison in January after serving more than three years for felony breaking and entering, records show, and is currently on parole.
Blackwood said the investigation is continuing. Investigators are not releasing more information about the murder or the arrests at this time, he said.
