The Cat’s Cradle will host a special, two-night benefit this weekend to help fellow music lover and Station owner Mike Benson pay his employees their last checks.
The shows are free but with a $10 suggested donation.
Benson will close the Station, a 201 E. Main St. music venue, on Dec. 31 to help settle the business’s tax bill with the N.C. Department of Revenue. Two other businesses that Benson owns at that location – The Tiger Room coffee shop and Southern Rail restaurant – closed in November.
Southern Rail Ventures LLC still owes $156,000 in back taxes, fees and interest, Benson said, and has hosted bands all month in an attempt to raise enough money to cover the bill and pay its employees. Local businesses have pitched in to help them find new jobs, he said.
Cat’s Cradle will host the benefit in its Back Room, at 300 E. Main St., starting at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, and again Saturday, Jan. 2, at 5 p.m.
Doors open an hour before the music starts. More information and tickets are available online at catscradle.com.
