A second pair of rainbow flags were stolen Wednesday night from a rural church off Old N.C. 86, south of Hillsborough.
Hillsborough United Church of Christ replaced the flags Thursday morning and reported the theft to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, a church official said. The first pair of rainbow flags posted beside the church’s sign at the corner of Davis Road were burned on Friday night, April 8.
Sheriff’s investigators said this week they are still investigating the flag-burning. It’s not certain if the vandalism was tied to House Bill 2, the new state law that requires transgender people to use public bathrooms that correspond to their biological gender.
Hillsborough UCC Pastor Jay Kennett said church members found the flags’ charred tatters Saturday morning. They put the flags up a few weeks ago to let the community know the church supported and welcomed LGBT folks, he said.
