Homeschool book club

The Chapel Hill Public Library will host a book club for homeschoolers from 1:30-2:15 p.m. in the program room at 100 Library Drive.

Optimist Club

The Optimist Club of Chapel Hill meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first, second and third Wednesdays of the month at the Bob Evans restaurant, 5419 Chapel Hill Blvd., Durham. New members are welcome.

Stop smoking classes

The Chatham County Public Health Department will host free classes for people who are quitting using tobacco beginning at 5:30 p.m. in conference room 1 in the Main Administrative building at Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro. Email Anna Stormzand to register.

General Meditation Class

An introduction to Buddhist philosophy, psychology and meditation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Kosala Buddhist Center, 711 W. Rosemary St., Suite E, Carrboro.,


Overeaters Anonymous

Overeaters Anonymous will meet from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursdays at Carrboro United Methodist Church, 200 Hillsborough Road. The group meets in the white building beside the main church building, directly across from Looking Glass Cafe.

Open house

Internationalist Books and Community Center will host an open house with board elections, photos and highlights of its 33-year history from 5-9 p.m. at 101 Lloyd St., Carrboro. 919-942-1740.

Chess Club

The Main Library will host a Chess Club meeting from 6-7 p.m. on the second floor of the library at 137 W. Margaret Lane, Hillsborough.

Triangle Weavers Guild

The Triangle Weavers Guild’s annual Round Robin: Learning From Each Other event will be at 7 p.m. in the Robert & Pearl Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill.


‘Eleanor Roosevelt at the United Nations’

The Shared Learning Association of Chapel Hill will host the lecture “Eleanor Roosevelt at the United Nations” by Dr. William Leuchtenburg at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at Celebration Assembly of God Church, 114 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill.

Blood donations

Donate blood to the American Red Cross from 2-6 p.m. at Hillsborough United Methodist Church, 130 W. Tryon St.


Legislative Breakfast on Mental Health

The 38th annual Legislative Breakfast on Mental Health will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the William and Ida Friday Center, 100 Friday Center Drive, Chapel Hill.

Farmers’ markets

The Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market is open from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday at 201 S. Estes Drive.

The Carrboro Farmers’ Market is open from 9 a.m. to noon in the Carrboro Town Commons, beside Town Hall at 301 W. Main St.

Rabies vaccination clinic

Orange County Animal Services’ rabies vaccination clinic will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Animal Services Center, 1601 Eubanks Road, Chapel Hill. Vaccinations cost $10. 919-942-7387,

Community Workshop Series

Story time

The Carrboro Branch Library will host story time for ages 2-5 at 10:30 a.m. Saturdays in January at 900 Old Fayetteville Road, Chapel Hill.
