Martha Ann Hart died Sept. 8, 2014, at the Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill. She was 80.
She was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on Dec. 30, 1933, to the late Forrest M. and Miriam W. Olson. In 1956 she earned a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Iowa College of Nursing in Iowa City, Iowa. The following year she married Larry Glen Hart of Le Mars, Iowa.
In a long nursing career, Martha worked in clinical settings including the University of Iowa Hospitals, the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, and the UNC-Chapel Hill Student Health Service. She served in public health and home health nursing in Wilmington, Delaware, and at the Home Health Agency of Chapel Hill, the North Carolina Department of Human Resources, and Triangle Hospice, where she was the first nurse coordinator when that organization was established in 1979.
An active longtime member of Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, she was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1997 and served in that capacity for 10 years. In addition to the diaconate, she served the church as a board member of the Johnson Service Corps, a longtime participant in the Parish Discernment Committee, a Stephen Ministry leader, a member of the Outreach Ministry Committee, and countless other activities. She gave to the community as a Guardian ad Litem advocate, a board member of the Orange County Partnership for Young Children, a reading tutor for at-risk children, a member of the meal team at the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service Community Kitchen, a longtime volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill, a participant in many committees and programs at Carol Woods, and in numerous other ways.
She enjoyed reading, taking walks, going to the movies, and attending plays. She loved being with her family. Nothing gave her more joy than spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by son David M. Hart and his wife Anne Yoder; son Thomas C. Hart; former daughter-in-law Amy Hart; son-in-law Donald Tomlinson; grandchildren Maggie Hart, Seth Hart, Callie Hart, Alexandra Tomlinson, and Jessica Tomlinson; step grandson Dylan Blankenship; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Larry Glen Hart, in 2012; her daughter, Mary Katherine Tomlinson, in 2000; and her brother, Richard “Dick” Olson, in 1999.
A funeral will be held Saturday, Sept.13, at 2:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, N.C., with burial in the churchyard and a reception afterward at Carol Woods, 750 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill. Cremation Society of the Carolinas is assisting the family.
