Chapel Hill: Obituaries

Elizabeth Shannon Patterson Pace

Elizabeth Shannon Patterson Pace, age 89, died at home in Chapel Hill on December 16, 2013. Mrs. Pace was a long time resident of Chapel Hill, having first come to the town in 1947 to serve as librarian at the fledgling Institute of Government.

She was a 1946 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and did graduate work at the Maxwell School of Public Administration of Syracuse University. Over the course of her life, she was an ardent and active Democrat, a volunteer with the League of Women Voters, and one of the first women ordained as an elder of the University Presbyterian Church.

Betsy, as she was known to family and friends, retired from the Institute of Government after decades as a personnel specialist. In her later life, she devoted herself to the care of her sisters Marie and Grace and her grandsons Robert and Pace.

Mrs. Pace was the widow of Clifford Edney Pace. She was the daughter of Arch McDougal Patterson and Marie Keeney Patterson of Savannah, Tennessee, and was the last surviving of eight siblings.

Mrs. Pace is survived by two daughters, Katy Pace Byrd and husband James T. Byrd of Lakeland, Florida, and Shannon Pace and husband William Elliott Warnock of Chapel Hill; and three grandsons, Charles Patterson Byrd (Anne Barnes) of Grafton, Massachusetts; and Robert Elliott Warnock and William Pace Warnock of Chapel Hill.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery, with Reverend Robert E. Dunham officiating and Walker’s Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Gifts in her memory may be made to University Presbyterian Church, 209 E. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27514, or to the charity of one’s choice.
