Grace Darling Thomas, longtime resident of Fearrington (Pittsboro, Chatham County) passed on September 15, just shy of 85 years old, due to complications from a fall and dementia.Thomas was one of the first women stockbrokers in the Washington, DC area and she educated herself for that career by studying at night and on weekends while she supported her children as a single mother by working as a secretary in several DC brokerage firms. Born in Smithfield, NC, the youngest of six; she left there at 20 and did all the things life in Washington offered. Thomas retired in 1986 and relocated to Fearrington Village, NC; where she lived for most of the remainder of her life. She returned to college to finish her undergraduate degree, graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1993 at the age of 63.Thomas was known in the Triangle as a natural foods cook, opening her home to many through regular dinners and cooking classes. She also served as Treasurer for the C.G. Jung Society of the Triangle during its formative years.She is survived by her daughter and son, Camilla and David Meek, both of Durham; and grandchildren, Jesmine Reymond of Nevada City, CA, and Ethan and Samuel Meek of Durham.A memorial service will be held at Evergreen United Methodist Church in Pittsboro on October 10 at 3pm.
