Robert Fox Patterson passed away with his family by his side on 24 Jan. 2016, losing his seven month battle with pancreatic cancer. Born to Hubert C. Patterson, MD and Betty Fox Patterson on 11 Dec. 1949 in Durham, NC, our gentle and sweet brother, uncle, and friend lived for the past 20 years in Charleston, SC.Rob spent his childhood in Chapel Hill, NC. He attended the Aiken Prep. School, George School, and UNC Chapel Hill. He graduated with a degree in American Studies from UNC in 1973. Upon receiving his Naval commission at graduation, he spent the next 4 years as a Diving and Salvage Officer in many parts of the world. He followed active duty with more than 20 years Naval Reserve duty, retiring as a Captain.He began a career with the Hartford Insurance Co. in 1977, with assignments in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Hartford, and Charlotte over the years. He retired as a Commercial Sales Manager in the early 1990s. In retirement, he worked as a caddie for the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, van driver and bartender at Kiawah Resort, and part time Insurance executive.Rob was a talented wrestler and soccer player in high school. He and his brothers and sister spent time fishing and hunting with their father throughout his youth. Some of his best, lifelong buddies began their friendships at the Beta Theta Phi fraternity at UNC Chapel Hill. Their golf reunions were a highlight in his life. He was married to Mary, and was devoted to her even after their divorce. His nieces and nephews were a source of great pride and enjoyment to him.Rob is survived by his twin brother Bill (wife Michelle), older brother Clif (wife Laura), and sister Mary Ann Ingersoll (husband Scott), nieces Beth, Meggie, Patricia, and nephews Chris and Robert.Rob is to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery (date to be determined). The family asks that his friends raise a toast to his indomitable good nature, kindness, and well lived life. In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage consideration of a donation to the Hospice of Charleston or Roper Hospital who provided excellent, compassionate care.
