Fisher, Pelland win flight in Four-Ball tournament
Chapel Hill golfer Michael Fisher and Kirk Pelland of Hillsborough combined to shoot a two-round total of 148 to win the D Flight in the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball One-Day Tournament of Champions in Southern Pines.
Joe Stepp and Mike Mackie from Hickory and Granite Falls respectively, carded a final round 68 to finish at 8-under 136 to win the overall gross title by two strokes.
The CGA-sanctioned tournament was played Tuesday and Wednesday at Pine Needles Golf & Country Club and the Mid Pines Club.
The field was divided into eight flights where gross and net prizes were awarded.
Henry Lister of Chapel Hill teamed with David McVeigh of Jonesborough, Tenn., and finished sixth in the F Flight with a 156 total.
Malone, May finish in the money in PGA pro event
Justin Malone of the Preserve at Jordan Lake and Joe May from Durham’s Hillandale Golf Course combined forces last week to enter the 2014 Ahead / E-Z-Go Carolinas PGA Pro-Pro Championship held in historic Pinehurst. Malone and May shot 71-63-70–204 to finish in the money, getting a piece of a five-way tie for 24th place in the field of more than 200 golfers.
The team of PGA Professionals Jerry Haas and Tim Straub successfully defended their title as champions, earning their third Carolinas PGA Pro-Pro Championship since 2010.
John Marino of Old Chatham and Andrew Shuck of the Charlotte Country Club carded a 214 total and tied for 62nd place.
Rick Brannon of the Chapel Hill Country Club and Sapona’s Lew Ferguson finished 13th in the Senior Pro-Pro with a total 217.
Former Tar Heel inducted into national hall
Bobby Guthrie, a former UNC baseball player who served as the Wake County schools athletics director, will be inducted into the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Hall of Fame on Dec.16 in National Harbor, Md. He recently reformatted the N.C. High School Athletic Association handbook and in 2010 revised the N.C. Department of Public Instruction Middle School Athletic Manual.
Cam Pappas joins the 49ers’ basketball team
Cam Pappas, a college junior and Cedar Ridge High graduate, made the varsity men’s basketball team at UNC Charlotte as a walk-on. The 49ers were 4-2, and Pappas hadn’t gotten into a game as of Friday.
