Chapel Hill: Sports

Sure signs of spring: baseball and other sports

Orange and Cedar Ridge released their spring schedules this week, and they include something to remind everyone that winter will soon be on its way out.

Both teams have exhibition baseball games scheduled for this Saturday.

Orange will play a double-header at Leesville — versus Fuquay-Varina at 1 p.m. and the host Pride at 3 p.m.

Cedar Ridge is scheduled to play at Eastern Guilford.

Chapel Hill High is getting into the swing of things even earlier. The Tiger softball team will play a scrimmage at Durham Jordan at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Chapel Hill’s girls’ soccer team has its first home scrimmage set for Thursday against Panther Creek — JVs at 4:30 p.m., varsity at 6 p.m.

Conference basketball tournaments under way

Last week’s snow created some confusion for local basketball conferences. Regular-season games were wrapped up Monday night, with Chapel Hill taking on Cardinal Gibbons and East Chapel Hill hosting Jordan.

That meant final pairings for the Big Eight and PAC-6 Conferences were not finalized in time to be included in today’s edition of the Chapel Hill News.

Regardless of the pairings, Chapel Hill’s teams had high enough seeds to guarantee home games for Wednesday night. The CHHS girls are scheduled to play at 5:30 and the boys at 7 p.m.

Big Eight semifinals are scheduled for Thursday and the finals on Friday — girls 5:30 and boys 7 p.m. — both games at Chapel Hill High School.

Carrboro opened play Tuesday night in the Mid-State tournament, with the girls facing Graham and the boys hosting either Bartlett Yancey or Jordan-Matthews.

See for updates.
