Johnston schools name employees of the year

The Johnston County school system recently honored employees in a number of specialties.

Top honors went to Marie Simmons, Itinerant Teacher/Related Services Employee of the Year; Jill Parrish, Media Specialist of the Year; Tricia Palmer, School Counselor/Student Advocate of the Year; and Carla Pearce, School Support Employee of the Year.

For the past 14 year, Simmons, a speech therapist, has worked with the county’s preschoolers, helping to get them ready for kindergarten. Parrish is the media specialist at Four Oaks Elementary School. Palmer, a counselor at Corinth Holders High School, was honored in part for organizing a candlelight vigil, grieving groups and individual grief counseling after a student committed suicide this school year. Pearce is a school social worker.

Media specialist – Daniel Barrett, Smithfield-Selma High School; Kevin Phipps, Clayton Middle; Shirley Purdy, East Clayton Elementary; Vanessa Watson, West Smithfield Elementary; Leta Woodall, Selma Elementary; and Cheryl Wright, Selma Middle.

School counselor/graduation coaches – Amanda Allen, East Clayton Elementary; Amanda Collins, Clayton Middle; Karla Denning, Meadow School; Julie Hopkins, South Smithfield Elementary; Betsy Jenks, South Johnston High; Rena Keith, Selma Elementary; Jill Kreacic, Dixon Road Elementary; Melissa Lee, Benson Middle; Kimberly Lewter, Cleveland High; Amy McGinnis, Polenta Elementary; Kim Peacock, South Johnston High; and Angela Poovey, Cleveland Elementary.

School support – Becky Anderson, school nurse; Pam Batchelor, digital learning specialist; Charlene Covington, teacher specialist; Melissa Evans, school nurse; Rebecca Helms, school psychologist; Serreda Jenkins, social worker; Jodie Meer, school psychologist; Holly Narron, school psychologist; and Elise Vieira da Rosa, school psychologist.
