Art in Clayton

Artwork by students and Clayton Woman’s Club members is on display through Feb. 2 at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. The display is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Admission is free.

Pottery classes

The Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center will offer two pottery classes this winter.

Starting Jan. 27, beginning handbuilding will meet from 10 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays through March 3. An evening class will meet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays from April 23 through June 4. This class is for students who want to make pottery without using the wheel. The cost is $100 for Smithfield residents and $125 for nonresidents. A 25-pound bag of clay is $20.

Starting Jan. 29, wheel throwing will meet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays through March 5. A daytime class will meet from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays from April 21 through May 26. This class will introduce students to the pottery wheel. The cost is $100 for Smithfield residents and $125 for nonresidents. A 25-pound bag of clay is $20.

Art at JCC

Collaborative works by artist Sue Avera and photographer Johnny Dickerson are on display through Feb. 2 in the Frank Creech Art Gallery at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield.

‘Blithe Spirit’ at NLT

The Neuse Little Theatre will present the Noel Coward comedy “Blithe Spirit” in February. Show times are 8 p.m. Feb. 20-21, 3 p.m. Feb. 22 and 8 p.m. Feb. 27-28 in the Hut on Front Street in downtown Smithfield.

Motown in Selma

Ice House Theatre

Concert series announces lineup

Here’s the schedule for the 2015 concert series at Flowers Crossroads, the Harris Teeter-anchored shopping center on N.C. 42 East at Buffalo Road near Clayton:

April 12: The Embers.

May 10: The Tams.

Sept. 13: Jim Quick and Coastline.

Oct. 11: Band of Oz.

Admission is free.

Art class for children

Doodlebugs, a weekly art class for children ages 18 months to 4 years, has resumed at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 Booker Dairy Road, Smithfield. In sessions at 10 a.m. Friday, children experiment with dough, paper, watercolors, glue and more. For Smithfield residents, the cost is $5 per session or $19 for four sessions. For nonresidents, the costs are $7 and $27, respectively. Register two days in advance by calling 919-934-1408.

Storyteller in Clayton

Storyteller Jeanne Robertson will speak at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. Tickets are $30 plus fees. They’re available online at theclaytoncenter.com, by phone at 919-553-1737 and in the Clayton Center box office. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Here’s the rest of the 2014-15 performing-arts series in Clayton.

Friday, March 20 – “Yesterday & Today: The Interactive Beatles’ Experience.” Tickets to this all-request concert are $25.

Saturday, April 11 – Jeremy Davis & The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra. Tickets are $30.

The Clayton Center will also present native sons the Malpass Brothers, who hail from Goldsboro, in a special event on Saturday, Feb. 7. Tickets are $20.

JCC concert series

Here are the remaining shows in the 25th anniversary concert series at Johnston Community College.

Pianist Emile Pandolfi with vocalist Dana Russell – 7 p.m. Jan. 23. The two will perform popular standards and Broadway hits. Tickets are $23.50 in advance and $25 at the door.

Charlotte’s Web – 1 p.m. March 7. Theatreworks USA will present the popular children’s story. Tickets are $13.50 in advance and $15 at the door.

Monthly art chat

Clayton Visual Arts Inc. has launched Third Tuesday Art Chat, a monthly gathering that offers artists a chance to share ideas, art products, resources, marketing tips, etc. The monthly chat is on the third Tuesday of the month in the Poole Room in The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. The chat starts at 6:30 p.m.
