Felicia Club celebrates Christmas
Donna Shumate, dean of applied industrial technology at Johnston Community College, was the speaker and entertainer at the December meeting of Clayton’s Felicia Club.
Shumate is a member of the Johnston County Chorale and the Sanctuary Choir at First Baptist Church in Smithfield. She told the club stories about the origins of some favorite Christmas carols and secular songs of the season. She then sang a verse or two of each. Club members joined in a sing-along on such songs as “I’ll be Home for Christmas” and “Silent Night.”
Lanie Woodard, program chair, told a personal Christmas story. When greatly stressed one shopping season, an older gentleman assisted her with calming helpfulness and then gave her a gold bell on a red ribbon he was wearing around his neck. He wished her a peaceful Christmas.
“It meant so much to me,” Woodard said as she placed one around each member’s neck, suggesting that they too pass this kind of peace on to others.
