The challenges keep coming and Corinth Holders just seems to keep getting better.
The Pirates moved to 9-0-0 on the season Thursday with a 2-0 road win over Wilson Fike. It was a matchup of two teams ranked in the top 10 in the state by Eurosport. Corinth Holders was ranked fifth entering the match and Fike stood seventh.
“it was a great playoff-like atmosphere for a non-conference game still early in the season,” said Pirates coach Brent Walston. “We hope we are ready to start the conference schedule (this week).”
Grant Austin scored both Corinth Holders goals in the victory.
Austin opened the scoring with eight minutes left in the first half. He ran onto a ball from Dane Martin and drilled it home. Five minutes into the second half, Aaron Lopez sent a ball in from the right side that found its way through the box and onto Austin’s foot. He finished it off with a driving shot just inside of the back post.
Christian Green had four saves in the win, notching his and the Pirates’ sixth shutout of the season.
The Pirates also beat East Wake 2-1 on Sept. 16, rallying for the win after the Warriors scored in the first minute of play. (Erik Laredo picked up the goal, chipping the ball in over Green from 30 yards out.)
Thirteen minutes later, Corinth Holders pulled back even when Zach Blinson scored on a header from Logan Biethman.
Austin scored the game-winner in the second half in the 66th minute, punching a ball past the rushing East Wake goalie for a goal after a pass from Derek Kaple.
“It was a good non-conference win for us over a 4A opponent,” Walston said. “It was a playoff caliber game.”
