The Share Your Christmas Program is designed to help local families enjoy a time of year when they need help the most. The Volunteer Center has worked with the Durham County Department of Social Services for the past 38 years to provide assistance during the holidays. Last year more than 3,100 people were served by this program.
Each year, since 1976 hundreds of individuals, companies, civic groups, families and churches have participated in this event and have made a real difference to those in need. Many of these families cannot afford the basic necessities. Holiday gifts are often difficult and sometimes impossible to provide.
“Some of the requests are heart-wrenching,” stated Adrienne Clark, Director of Special Programs for the Volunteer Center. “We have elderly folks asking only for socks and toilet paper and children who don’t have a pair of shoes that fit. It is amazing that is a city with so much to offer, that we have families with so much need.”
This year there are currently 400 families still in need of sponsors for this holiday season. Anyone wishing to help can “adopt” a family or make a financial contribution to help support families that are not sponsored.
