A Durham man was arrested Friday evening and charged with shooting a toddler during a drive-by shooting last week on Great Bend Drive.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Joint Fugitive Task Force and the Durham Police Department arrested 26-year-old Marion Lacount Laney on North Creek Drive.
Officers were dispatched to a shooting call on Great Bend Drive shortly before 3 p.m. on Feb. 16. When they arrived, they found a 1 ½-year-old boy who had been shot inside the house. The child was taken to the hospital for treatment and has since been released.
Officers were told that numerous shots were fired by the occupants of a dark-colored sedan.
Laney is charged with one count of discharging a firearm into occupied property inflicting serious injury, one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of injury to property and one count of discharging a firearm within the city limits. He has been placed in Durham County Jail under a $1.5 million bond.
The toddler was not the intended victim, according to investigators, but the shooting does not appear to have been a random incident.
