The Durham Lions Club recently awarded scholarships to local students. Jordan Anderson and Joshua Pitts, of Boy Scout Troop 17, earned the Scouting Scholarship by becoming Eagle Scouts. And Chelsea Farmer, at Hampton University, was awarded the Luther Barbour Scholarship for academic merit. Two new scholarships were awarded to Zachary Dickson, a senior at Trinity of Durham and Chapel Hill High School, and to Jordan Anderson.
Carlton Harrell spoke at the at the meeting of the Tobaccoland Kiwanis Club of Durham Sept. 8. Harrell discussed his book in which he describes how German U-Boats during World War II sunk eight hundred United States merchant ships along the outer banks of North Carolina and Virginia. Harrell was the associate editor of the Herald Sun at the time of his retirement in 1996.
