Mr. Arthur Ellison Sloat, age 87, of Reno, NV died Sunday, April 20, 2014 after a short illness with son David and David’s family by his side.
Art was born July 5, 1926 in Lowell, MA to the late Mr. Archibald Elmer Sloat and Helen Bertha Ross. He was raised in Upper Montclair, NJ, attended Montclair Academy and after high school completed a stint in the Army Air Corp towards the end of the WWII. Art graduated from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA where he met his former wife of forty-five years, Barbara Parcell (Bobbie). He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and Mason Washoe Lodge in Reno, NV. Art was an avid golfer and had been a member of the Hope Valley Country Club for twenty years and enjoyed many friendships over the years through golf, hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed our beautiful country and took any chance possible to drive the back roads, taking photographs and meeting people in small towns throughout the USA.
Art began his business career with Johnson & Johnson with positions taking his family to Hartford, CT, Seattle, WA, Farmington, MI. and Middletown, NJ. He then moved on to Dow Chemical in Midland, MI as Marketing Director of Consumer Products; Warner Lambert in Mendham, NJ as V.P. of Sales; Liggett & Myers in Durham, NC as President and then onto Florida when he purchased two businesses. Art spent his retirement years in Astor, FL and Reno, NV.
Surviving Mr. Sloat are Bobbie Sloat of Durham, N.C. Five children; Peter Arthur Sloat of Fibre, MI; Joanne Louise Whitenack and husband, Bruce of Durham, NC; David Ellsworth Sloat and wife, Sabrina of Reno, NV; Susan Ann Hewitt and husband, Tom formally of Durham and currently in Houston, TX and Robert Ellison Sloat of Wake Forest, NC. Eight grandchildren, Amy Joanne Brumbach and Adam Jeffrey Brumbach, of Mebane, NC, children of Joanne; Spencer Buchanan Sloat of Reno, NV; Alexis Renwick Hewitt of Durham, NC; Katie Sloat Herberger (Adam) of Colts Neck, NJ, Megan Sloat Martin (Adam) of Kalamazoo, MI, Libby Sloat of Sault Ste. Marie, MI and Kelsey Sloat Merkart (Jimmy) of Ludington, MI. One Great-grandchild, Myles Jeffrey Rand of Ludington, MI. A private memorial service where Art’s ashes will be scattered will be held at a beloved spot in the Florida Keys.
