DURHAM – Beverly Lou Larson Stone, 85, passed away at The Forest at Duke on Wednesday, December 23, 2015, after a long illness.Beverly was born August 1, 1930, one of two children of Alma Phillips Larson and Clarence August Edson Larson of Piedmont, CA. She grew up in the Bay Area and attended Piedmont High School. Beverly graduated from the School of Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley with a major in Medical Laboratory Studies. After graduation, Beverly married Donald Eugene Stone, also a Berkeley student. In time, the couple had three daughters to which Beverly dedicated her time and energy. As a devoted mother, she become an incredible cook, accomplished seamstress, and financial manager for the family. Don joined the faculty at Tulane University in New Orleans where the family lived for six years. In 1963, the family moved to Durham, NC after Don accepted a position at Duke University. Through his botanical work, Don became involved with the Organization for Tropical Sciences (OTS). Beverly worked with Don at OTS for over 20 years. For one sabbatical semester, the family lived in San José, Costa Rica. Through the years, Beverly did volunteer work with children in Creative Arts for Children (Tulane), Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts (New Orleans and Durham), and American Red Cross First Aid (Durham). She loved spending her time playing bridge, researching genealogy, and as treasurer of her investment club. Beverly and Don enjoyed cruising and traveling extensively, especially spending time in Lake Tahoe, CA.Beverly is survived by daughters Janne Elaine Stone, Diane Stone Langdon and husband, Bert; grandchildren, Robert, Lauren and Courtney Langdon, all of Houston, TX. She is also survived by brother, Stewart Larson and wife, Caryl; nieces, Amy Larson and Debbie Larson all of Oakland, CA; and son-in-law, Tom Eller of Chapel Hill, NC.In addition to her parents, Beverly was predeceased by her husband, Don and daughter, Terry Anne Eller.In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to OTS, 410 Swift Ave, Durham, NC, 27705.The family will receive friends at The Forest at Duke on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Ritz Theater.
