Kathryn Hill Whitfield passed away quietly in her sleep on Sunday, June 15th, after several years of declining health. A memorial is planned in Santa Clara, California for family and friends. Kathryn was raised in Waynesville, NC, graduated from Salem Academy and Agnes Scott College, and at 43, earned an MS in education from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her marriage to Henry A. Whitfield, Jr. of Chapel Hill lasted 66 years until his passing in 2012, and together they raised six children. Kathryn’s career included social work, elementary education, and student counseling. As a mother she enjoyed beach trips to Topsail Island, cooking, knitting, and humor and singing. After retiring to Emerald Pond in Durham, and in her last years in Santa Clara, CA, Kathryn made many friends and always brightened the day of those around her. She is survived by sons Henry (Santa Clara, CA), Thomas (Greensboro), and Richard (Cary), and a daughter Kathryn Pezzi (Whispering Pines). Kathryn was a very special lady that we will miss!
