A better sgn
Regarding the news story “NCDOT tries something new to thwart Durham’s Can Opener bridge”:
Sign should read:
“Low bridge ahead. If your truck height is over 10 feet 5 inches or you do not know the height you MUST follow detour signs as shown. You WILL rip the top of your truck off at this underpass and risk permanent revocation of your driver’s license.”
A minimum of one strobe light should be at each corner, also triggered by the mechanism that triggers the warning sign.
Yes, I know I said 10 feet, 5 inches but that allows at least a small margin of error for the driver who tests it. Yes, revocation of license is more than a bit drastic, but if you are willing to ignore THIS warning, I shiver to think what other traffic signs you cannot read and comprehend.
GREAT! Let’s use a bunch more taxpayer dollars to keep idiots from self destructing.
I suggest that for every truck that is stopped, DOT issue a “ticket” that costs the driver $500. That’s well below the cost of repairing the truck and that money will ultimately offset the cost of the traffic signal for taxpayers. Is it too much to expect people to pay for their own stupidity?
I think the only thing that will truly stop all crashes into this bridge (and bridges like it) for good, will be self-driving vehicles (specifically trucks). When they’re more mainstream, it will be easy to program the software of too-tall trucks to avoid underpasses they won’t fit through.
