Police are investigating spray-painted obscenities on the Knightdale High School and Community Park sign on Bryan Chalk Lane that showed up on Valentine’s Day.

The vandalism referenced East Wake High School, the team Knightdale was scheduled to play in basketball that Friday night. The game was rescheduled because of inclement weather.

The vandals also broke off some of the lettering on the sign.

The sign, which also marks Knightdale Community Park, is actually town property, not school property.

The vandalism was apparently in retaliation to two similar incidents headed by Knightdale students at East Wake within the last few weeks, School Resource Officer Pete Smith said.

“It’s quite a rivalry and it’s unlike others in the area because of the intensity (and) the length some students are willing to go,” he said. “Unfortunately it’s no longer a healthy rivalry if students are damaging things that don’t even belong to the schools.”

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office confirmed one incident of vandalism on a school bus at East Wake High School. That investigation is ongoing.

Smith said police are investigating the vandalism at Knightdale High School and it’s possible that the person responsible for the vandalism will face criminal charges of damage to real property in addition to being responsible for paying the town for the damage to its sign.

Knightdale spokesman Brian Bowman said the town plans to repair the sign, but they aren’t sure how much that will cost yet, since it will include the cost of labor.

The game that was canceled because of snow was rescheduled for Thursday Feb. 20, which is also East Wake High’s senior night.
