As budget season gets underway for Wake County public schools, students in Knightdale High School’s Academy of Environmental Sciences are taking matters into their own hands to make sure they’ll have the money to strengthen the academy.
Students in the academy are planning the academy’s first fundraiser, the Earth Day 5K, scheduled for April 27 at Knightdale Station Park to help adjust to the academy’s projected growth and other special activities.
“We’ve gotten to the point (where we want) to see if we can expand some efforts and grow the academy,” said Geof Duncan, Knightdale High School’s Career and Technical Education coordinator.
Duncan said some of the goals of the academy are to buy new technology, support ongoing projects and support upcoming and outgoing students.

The county has helped where it can, Duncan said, but there are other things that the county has not been able to fund. Currently, the academy has a composting project underway that will soon need some extra cash.
Students’ lunch waste is collected and composted and then used on plants around the school, among other places. The project was funded by a grant and in order for it to continue, students had to come up with a way to earn money.
In addition to the composting project, Duncan said another effort the academy would like to fund is creating scholarship opportunities for seniors.
“(We want) to make sure they walk away with something and give them a push to where they want to go,” he said.
The academy also hosts an annual banquest for students and parents that will cost more as the number of students increase.
But the outgoing students aren’t the only ones the school has to worry about.
This year, the academy began recruiting students from 8th grade, starting them off in the program in 9th grade instead of 10th grade. That extra class of students puts the academy’s total registration numbers around 200, Duncan said.
“That’s one of the reasons we’re thinking, ‘Hmm, we probably need some cash,” he said.
In keeping with the environmental theme, Duncan said students wanted to pursue something with a green theme and wanted to hold some kind of event on or around Earth Day.
The 5K, which will include a walk and a run, will feature students along the track with Earth Day facts. Duncan said vendors and sponsors may be set up, but they are still in the process of confirming details.
Runners should plan to register by April 13 at kaes.pubworks.com/EarthDay5K. Registration before April 13 is $20 and includes a T-shirt. After April 13, registration costs $25 but a T-shirt is not guaranteed.
