Oren Daniel Massey, Jr.

Oren Daniel Massey, Jr. passed away December 8, 2014. Oren Massey was born January 5, 1926 in Wake County. He grew up in Zebulon, NC, the son of the late Oren Daniel Massey, Sr. and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Finch Massey. Oren is better known to many as “Uncle Buddy.” He was the brother of the late, Geraldine Rountree, Iris Howard, Merle Adams, Gloria Debnam, Janet Blackman, and Ben Massey.

Oren is survived by his brother-in-law Edward Dwite Debnam,Sr., nieces Betsy Rountree, Paula Crossland, Amy Boyd, Jan Green, Bobby Lynn Lyles, Susan Taylor, Billy Jane Walsh, Cindy Carroll, nephews, Ed Debnam, Jr., Dan Blakeman, Bill Blakeman, Michael Blakeman, David Massey, and their families, as well as George Rigsby Massey,Jr. and III, Linda Stell, Mary Gordon Bryant,Tommy Massey, Joyce Magnum, and many other relatives from his large and loving family: and close friend Nancy Ide.

Oren served in the United States Army during WWII. He was stationed in the Philippines, and Japan where he worked in the motor pool serving as a mechanic and driver. Oren drove dignitaries and scientists throughout Hiroshima, Japan immediately following the aftermath of the atomic bomb. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture for 30 years, retiring in 1992. Oren remained on the Massey family farm for most of his life where he took care of his mother, helped run their Purina Feed Store and Hatchery, worked for the state, and farmed the land. He loved animals especially his dogs. Everywhere he went his dog was with him in the front seat of his truck. Oren was raised going to the Wakefield Central Baptist Church. He graduated from Hardbarger Business College with a degree in accounting. He was also a member of the Wake County Ducks Unlimited.

Funeral services 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Massey Funeral Home, 913 N. Arendell Avenue, Zebulon NC, followed by a graveside service at the Massey Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
