We were pleased to learn that Knightdale council members are interested in extending a greenway trail from its current terminus to Knightdale Station Park.
The project is reliant on grant funds, so until the town successfully completes that process and receives the grant funding, this new trail is not a done deal.
Still, Knightdale council members see the value in greenways as a great recreational space for their residents. They also see the value in extending that path closer to Wendell, which will help grow the current system into a more inclusive greenway, by providing access points in Wendell for residents who don’t want to have to drive to Knightdale just to get out of their cars and walk.
The extension of the greenway trail to Knightdale Station Park would bring the trail to within shouting distance of Wendell Falls, which is working hard to build its own trail system within the huge development. From Wendell Falls, it’s easier to imagine the trail stretching even further to Wendell Park.
That kind of regional thinking is something we’ve long encouraged in this space and we’re glad to see efforts made toward that end.
The extension of the greenway would also, of course, be a boon for Knightdale residents who would have more than one mile of new trail to explore and greater access to what is certainly a key indicator of a good quality of life in Knightdale.
