It was refreshing to hear new Zebulon town manager Joe Moore talking aggressively about how downtown can once again become a destination.
Moore was speaking to a group of Zebulon Woman’s Club members and other town officials at a meeting which also included Clayton downtown redevelopment supporter Joyce Blackley.
Moore, though, had the most important words for those in attendance, since he stands much closer to the town’s purse strings. He outlined several things the town can do to help re-energize downtown Zebulon.
Some of those things – let’s be honest – would cost public-sector money. But others wouldn’t. Moore inherited the town’s current operating budget, so it will be several months before the public gets a real sense of just how high Moore’s commitment to downtown really is.
But it’s nice to hear a manager talk about downtown improvement in such a way as to sound like it’s an issue he’s studied on. And his suggestions may well require a commitment from more than just the town commissioners. Just how willing private property owners are to work toward the public good remains to be seen.
It just somehow feels good to hear downtown still has a pulse as far as the town is concerned. We look forward to next year when the town’s commitment should look more concrete than it does now.
