This is to let those who have been interested in the efforts to make the 100 and 200 blocks more attractive by the Zebulon Beautification Committee that the Zebulon Woman’s Club has agreed to absorb the Beautification Committee as one of their projects.
The Beautification Committee spent three full years on beautifying these two blocks and working with the downtown merchants and property owners. We are proud of our accomplishments which included sprucing up many of the downtown buildings and building bridges between the businesses and the Town of Zebulon. We encouraged the Town to landscape around the railroad tracks.
With private donations from many of our friends, we repaired and repainted the lattice work at the entrance to the two alley ways in the 100 block. We had four planters custom designed and urged the Garden Club to take care of the plantings. There is no water available at these sites. Until we were no longer physically able, my husband and I lugged gallon containers of water to keep the plants growing.
There is so much more to be done. We believe if we can convince the downtown businesses to keep their property clean and in good repair, taking time to wash their windows, and keep the premises clean, being sure their facades and windows are attractive, there is no trash on the sidewalk or street directly in front of their business, there will be a great change in the appearance overall.
We may never have much of a retail area, but we can make the best of what we have. Even though we will try to get back to our work with the help of the Zebulon Woman’s Club, we need some younger energetic volunteers desperately. Christmas is coming up. If there is someone out there who loves decorating Christmas trees, will you step forward and undertake the responsibility of decorating the three trees we planted in the vacant lot between Italia Express and Zebulon Beauty Supply? Our committee members are not physically able to do it.
Isn’t someone out there who loves gardening and will undertake the responsibility of the four planters? Maybe someone else who has a pickup truck and can haul water to keep the plants growing?
Downtown revitalization will never happen without the help of the Town of Zebulon, the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce, civic clubs, the downtown merchants, and most important of all, help from Zebulon citizens. You don’t have to live in Zebulon to participate. You just have to have the desire and enthusiasm to make our town a prettier place in which to live. You can call me at 919.269.2089 if you are interested in helping us. I will be waiting for your call.
