The PGA Junior League Raleigh All Stars from Pine Hollow, River Ridge and Wil-Mar golf clubs defeated the Chapel Hill-based team to win the state championship and advance to the league regional set for Sevierville, Tenn., Sept. 13-14.
The Pine Hollow-based members of the winning team are Tyler Dechellis, Spencer Delorme, Aaron Haberkorn, Coltin Scott and Jacob Kallam. Players from River Ridge are Biggs Hawley, Brady Hooks, William Russell and Holden Lee. Brannon Ferguson and Noah Butler play out of Wil-Mar.
The Chapel Hill team was made up of golfers from Governors Club, Brier Creek, Falls Village and Wildwood Green.
The PGA All Stars will meet champions from South Carolina (Columbia), Tennessee (Knoxville) and Kentucky (Louisville) during the event. The winner of that event will be invited to participate in the PGA Junior League National Championship held in Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 24-26.
Teams are made up of players 9 to 13 years old, and the matches are eight-on-eight with four pairs from each side competing in a “scramble” format. In the scramble style, each player hits a tee shot before the pairs select the best lie and then each hits from that spot, pressing toward the hole until the first team drops a putt.
Participants tee off from the ladies’ tees, and pick up their ball when the next shot would be for triple bogey.
“It mimics Little League Baseball a little bit,” local commissioner and Pine Hollow coach Johnny Scott said last year explaining the league. “They can sub in and out after three holes. And there’s an instant reward – after three holes the winner gets a flag sticker to go on a bag tag.
“It’s tailored toward having advanced golfers teach beginners. That’s a role of the program. We put our ‘anchors’ with smaller kids who learn from them.”
Funds are needed to help with the trip. Pine Hollow Golf Club is helping to raise funds for the trip with a 50/50 raffle. Raffle ticket purchases and donations can be made online by visiting the fundraising section of the online store at pinehollowgolf.com. Raffle tickets are $5. Tickets can also be purchased in person in the golf shop.
