Corinth Holders swim teams show the way again

Corinth Holders kept its winning streaks alive in Two Rivers 3A Conference swimming meets, sweeping up boys and girls team victories during a meet Jan. 9 at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center.

The Pirates won both meets by more than 115 points. Corinth Holders had 352.5 points in the girls meet; Cleveland was second with 236 points. The Pirate boys’ team finished with 380 points, 156 ahead of runner-up South Johnston. Western Harnett was third in both meets.

South Johnston’s girls finished fourth and Smithfield-Selma’s boys were fifth.

Corinth Holders’ quartets won all six of the relay events: the 200-yard medley, the 200 free and the 400 free.

Double winners dominated the individual girls races. Corinth Holders had three of those. Gabby Terrill won the 200 freestyle (two minutes, 26.17 seconds) and the 500 (6:37.35), while Stephanie Grandin took the 200 individual medley (2:16.14) and the butterfly (1:03.32). The Pirates’ Michaela Carter won the 100 free in 57.19 seconds and the backstroke in 1:05.88.

Cleveland’s Kaylee Davis continued the trend with wins in the 50 free (28.15) and the breaststroke (1:21.82).

Smithfield-Selma’s Kara Harrison was the runner-up in the 50 free and the backstroke. The Spartans’ Christina Ball took fourth in the individual medley.

Corinth Holders had five individual event winners on the boys’ side: Connor Blandford in the 200 free (1:46.25), Christian Lower in the individual medley (2:18.13), Bailey Blackwell in the 100 free (54.76), Patrick Ryan in the 500 (5:20.36) and Neal Quinn in the backstroke (57.91).

South’s Zachary Bridges won the 50 freestyle in 25 seconds flat, just nipping teammate Garrison McLeod (25.04) for the victory. McLeod was also second in the breaststroke for the Trojans.

Dalton Langston of Cleveland won the butterfly in 56.97 seconds. Smithfield-Selma’s Gage Capps was second in the individual medley.
