Harnett Central picked up where it left off last season as the defending Greater Neuse River 4A Conference boys golf champs finished one stroke ahead of Garner to win Tuesday’s league match at Wil-Mar Golf Club.

It was the first conference event of the season, with the originally-scheduled March 3 opener at River Ridge Golf Club being canceled due to weather. Coaches are eyeing dates in mid-to-late April to make up that match.

Harnett Central junior Zack Freeman claimed individual medalist honors Tuesday as he carded a 2-under-par 33 for the nine-hole round.

Others breaking the 40-stroke mark were Garner’s Trey Capps, Rolesville’s Blake McShea and West Johnston’s Noah Parton with scores of 38, and Garner’s Matteo Ceyrolles and Harnett Central’s Jacob Lowe with 39 each.

Team scores are the sum of the four lowest rounds posted by each school.

Harnett Central finished at 159, followed by Garner (160), Rolesville and West Johnston (171 each), Clayton (182), East Wake (218), Knightdale (230) and Southeast Raleigh (259).

Central’s other two factoring scores came from Cole Long (42) and Brendon Johnson (45). For Garner, Colby Jackson shot 41 and Nolan Leonard shot 42.

Brice Connors (41), and Grayson Kiefer and Gage Holleman (46 each) completed West Johnston’s team score and Peyton Windley (41), Justin Poole (43) and Ryan Moss rounded the team score for Rolesville.

Clayton was led by Matt King, Alex Casatelli and Lee Smith (45 each), and Davis Lanier (47). Scoring for Knightdale were Chris Sebastiani (42), Sam Ellis (56), Will Fichter (63) and Marcus Manley (69).

East Wake and Southeast Raleigh each had just three golfers compete in the match.

Kirby Yeargin shot 45, Evan King 47 and Austin Herber 56 for the Warriors, and Niles Hill shot 52, Marcus Mitchell 67 and Zach Barco 70 for the Bulldogs.

Rolesville is scheduled to host the next league round Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Wendell Country Club.
