Johnston pipeline breaks, sewage spills into creek

Johnston County officials say a broken pipeline caused a sewage spill that resulted in more than 13,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilling into an unnamed creek in that feeds into the Neuse River.

The incident occurred Dec. 22 near 2735 Buffalo Road. The pipeline that broke was a force main, a pipeline in which pumps push the sewage through the pipes, usually because the effluent in the pipe is traveling up hill. The line is part of the Central Johnston wastewater system.

The spill was reported to the Division of Water Resources, which is investigating the incident.
