Shoppers here will soon have another option to add to their list of places to fill their weekly grocery list.
ALDI, the new grocery story on Timber Drive, plans to have a grand opening on Jan. 22.
ALDI is a discount supermarket chain with more than 9,000 grocery stores around the world. They tend to sell their brands for 50 percent less than traditional supermarkets.
The store, located on 750 Timber Drive, will be right across the street from Lowe’s Foods.
“We’re confident in our business model,” District Manager Stuart Wood said. “We do that often. We come in and we see a particular spot we can do well in and regardless of the competitors in the area we take them on. It’s more about the prime time area for us, than who is around.”
“We felt this would be a good opportunity for us to do well in this area. So no offense to (our competitors) but we’re not too concerned about them. We have a different kind of product line and a different kind of shopping experience.”
Wood said he hopes the store will attract a good mix of people, ranging from lowerclass shoppers, working-class shoppers, to mothers and upperclass families.
“It’s for people that want to save 30 to 40 percent on their grocery bill,” Wood said. “We don’t have fancy displays and fancy signage, but (we) sell a good quality product at a decent prices.”
To celebrate the opening of the new Garner store, ALDI will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend. Following the ceremony, the first 100 shoppers will receive a golden ticket, each containing ALDI gift certificates of various amounts.
The square footage of the store is 17,000 square feet.
Customers can also tour the store, sample ALDI exclusive brand products and enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to win a year’s supply of ALDI produce. ALDI currently carries nearly 70 varieties of fruits and vegetables, including several organic produce items.
“We look forward to introducing Garner shoppers to ALDI, where they can find the majority of their average weekly shopping list from our exclusive brand products – including fresh meats, fruits, vegetables and bakery items – for up to 50 percent less,” Scott Kornegay, Salisbury division vice president of ALDI, said in a press release. “We are committed to bringing ALDI customers the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices in a simple and easy-to-navigate shopping environment.”
The Garner store features high ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally-friendly building materials – such as recycled materials and energy-saving refrigeration and light bulbs.
ALDI will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. ALDI accepts cash, debit and EBT cards.
ALDI was founded in a small town in Germany. It was started by a mom and her two sons. The two brothers took over the business and split. One brother brought ALDI to the United States in 1976 in Iowa.
