Girl Scouts around North Carolina are turning to a new application and website to help with their cookie sales.
The North Carolina Coastal Pines Girl Scout Council announced that local troops have the opportunity to sell cookies online through COCOdirect and COCO Cookie Command.
The new website and app are part of Girl Scouts’ new national Digital Cookie platform, a revolutionary addition to the Girl Scout Cookie Program that will enhance and expand the program’s ability to teach girls new skills for business and life.
Girl Scouts in the local council began using the app last Saturday and will continue to through March 1.
“Through Digital Cookie, we are bringing the Girl Scout Cookie Program fully into the 21st century,” said Lisa Jones, the council’s chief executive officer. “Digital Cookie lets us continue our proud tradition of teaching today’s girls the skills of tomorrow, while remaining true to the core principles of the Girl Scout mission and the values taught by our iconic cookie program.”
The app and website were developed and managed with oversight from Girl Scouts of the USA.
In Garner, Girl Scouts and their leaders are selling online too. Christy Warner, the cookie manager for Brownie Troop 1319, said so far the app has worked for her and her daughter.
“We love it because it is able to reach out to the friends or family members that don’t live here locally but may want to support the Girl Scouts,” Warner said.
“Previously we have not been able to have any direct shipments. So if my family in New Jersey wanted to ship cookies out to them, I would have to ship them myself. And that wasn’t feasible for some girls.”
Now those ordering cookies online can pay for the shipping themselves.
Here’s how it works. The cookie seller sets their cookie sales goal. They can go to a buyer’s home and record the data on their tablet or phone if the person is local. A buyer who lives elsewhere can go on the website and app and type in the person’s name they want to buy the cookies from. The buyer buys the cookies and puts in their shipping information. The money is then credited to the Girl Scout.
As they go along, the Girl Scouts can track how close they are to their goal.
Lucy Olson, 9, of Garner, said her goal is to sell 900 boxes this year. And she seemed confident about it.
“Well, I did 600 last year,” Olson said proudly.
“I have a lot of people to sell to. (The app and website) let’s our grandmas – because they live in Minnesota and Wisconsin – get the cookies easier.”
Jennifer Barrett, the mom of a Brownie Scout, said she likes that it is paperless. She said sales have also increased because now people can use their credit cards.
Before you had to do everything by hand, she said.
“It has become more accessible and convenient.”
Her daughter Jessica Barrett, 9, has a goal to sell 500 boxes. If she meets that goal, she’ll win a trip to go to the Great Wolf Lodge.
But keep the app out of the hands of small cookie lovers, Haley Genadio, 9, said.
“One time I had a little girl run up to our cookie booth and asked could she have 15 boxes of peanut butter patties,” Haley Genadio said. “She looked about four or five. Her mom said ‘No you can only have one box.’”
