Barbecue fundraiser

Boy Scout Troop 391 in Garner will hold its annual barbecue fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at Garner United Methodist Church, 201 Methodist Drive, Garner. Barbecue chicken or combination plates with baked beans and slaw will be served. Lunch plates will be available for delivery with purchase of 10 or more. Call 919-210-5879 to order. Plates are $8 each.

Cans for a Cure

Vandora Springs Elementary will host the Cans for a Cure aluminum can recycling project throughout the summer months at 1300 Vandora Springs Road, Garner. Everyone is invited to recycle aluminum cans at the school in the blue recycling dumpster. All proceeds will benefit the Relay for Life of Garner. For more information email jhunt@wcpss.net.

Test Prep

The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield will hold four free programs to help high school students prepare for the SAT and ACT college admissions tests, and write their application essay. The library is located at 305 E. Market St., Smithfield. Call 919-934-8146, option 3, or stop by the reference desk to sign up for any event.

Blood drive

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at St. Mary’s Church, 1008 Vandora Springs Road, Garner. Call 919-773-0867 for an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome.

National Recovery Month

Johnston County Mental Health Center will host a celebration of National Recovery Month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 403 Caswell St., Smithfield. There is no admission fee and the celebration will feature games, health screenings, music, mascots, speakers, vendors and food. Call 919-989-5514 for more information.

Aversboro Run Club

Aversboro Run Club meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday outside Aversboro Restaurant & Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. The club is open to every runner and walker, and runs set routes of 3, 4 and 5 miles covering many paces. The restaurant offers food and drink specials to all walkers and runners upon return.

Square dancing lessons

A food pantry is open from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 1082 Amelia Church Road, Clayton. The food is free to anyone presenting an ID card. For more information, call 919-934-0213.
