Relay golf tournament
Clyde’s Chapel Baptist Church Relay for Life team will hold its annual golf tournament at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at the Wendell Country Club, 108 Jake May Drive, Wendell. The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield will hold four free programs to help high school students prepare for the SAT and ACT college admissions tests, and write their application essay. an SAT Challenge test will be held at 10 a.m., and an ACT Challenge test will be held at noon. The 10-question challenges are designed to help students get ready with sample test questions, test timing and pacing and score raising strategies.
The combination SAT/ACT practice test will begin at 9:30 a.m. Students must arrive by 9 a.m. The test will help students get a feel for the questions and experience exam-like conditions.
Flu shot clinic
A flu shot clinic will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Garner Senior Center, 205 E. Garner Road, Garner. Appointments are required, along with a copy of the patient’s insurance card. Uninsured cost is $25. Register at the Senior Center from 9:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Operation Medicine Drop
The Garner Police Department will hold its Operation Medicine Drop from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, in the Council Chambers, in Building B of Town Hall at 900 7th Ave., Garner. Volunteers are needed to help clean the streets of Garner and the watershed area and shore of Lake Benson from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Descendants of Amos “Babe” and Lenora “Nora” Wood Coats will have a family reunion and old fashioned picnic at 12:30 p.m. Sunday September 28, at Clemmons Educational State Forest at 2411 Old U.S. 70, Clayton.

The Garner Optimist Club will host its 16th annual golf tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at Reedy Creek Golf Course, 585 Reedy Creek Drive, Four Oaks. The next CIT training academy is scheduled for Oct. 20-24. CIT is a training and response program designed for law enforcement and other first responders who handle crisis calls involving people with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and alcohol and substance use disorders.
CIT training provides an “on-the-job-tool” that can be used by law enforcement personnel and other first responders to recognize mental health issues and crises and to assist in directing individuals with mental illness to the appropriate health care systems and reduce their involvement in the criminal justice system. Aversboro Run Club meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday outside Aversboro Restaurant & Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. • Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
