Pasta and Prizes

Boy Scout Troop #331 will hold a barbecue plate sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the corner of Vandora Springs Road and Seventh Avenue in Garner. $9 buys barbecue, potatoes, green beans, hushpuppies and dessert. All proceeds will benefit the Scout Camp.
New terminal opens
Johnston Regional Airport’s new facility will open at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at 3149 Swift Creek Road, Smithfield. The event will allow guests to tour the new 8,600-square-foot terminal, which provides state-of-the-art facilities for pilots who fly into Johnston County.
Early bird tickets are available through Oct. 31 for the fifth annual Broadway Voices series. The series will go live at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 with a performance from Gary Mauer and Elizabeth Southard at the Garner Performing Arts Center, 742 W. Garner Road, Garner. Capathia Jenkins will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, and Alli Mauzey will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2015. Tickets are $35 for an individual show, $75 for a season ticket, or $65 for early bird tickets. The Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department will hold its Trick-or-Treat the Trails from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at White Deer Park, 2400 Aversboro Road, Garner. The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield will hold four free programs to help high school students prepare for the SAT and ACT college admissions tests, and write their application essay. The combination SAT/ACT practice test will begin at 9:30 a.m. Students must arrive by 9 a.m. The test will help students get a feel for the questions and experience exam-like conditions.
Veterans Day celebration
The Town of Garner and Garner Veterans Memorial Committee will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Aversboro Road Baptist Church, 1600 Aversboro Road. The Garner Magnet High School Symphonic Band will hold a patriotic mini-concert at 10:30 a.m. Major General Todd Kelly, Air National Guard Assistant to the Commander, Air Mobility Command, will speak.

Aversboro Run Club
Aversboro Run Club meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday outside Aversboro Restaurant & Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. The club is open to every runner and walker, and runs set routes of 3, 4 and 5 miles covering many paces. The restaurant offers food and drink specials to all walkers and runners upon return.

Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.
• Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
• The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
