Community Notes: Oct. 29

New terminal opens

Johnston Regional Airport’s new facility will open at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at 3149 Swift Creek Road, Smithfield. The event will allow guests to tour the new 8,600-square-foot terminal, which provides state-of-the-art facilities for pilots who fly into Johnston County.

Broadway Voices

Early bird tickets are available through Oct. 31 for the fifth annual Broadway Voices series. The series will go live at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 with a performance from Gary Mauer and Elizabeth Southard at the Garner Performing Arts Center, 742 W. Garner Road, Garner. Capathia Jenkins will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, and Alli Mauzey will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2015. Tickets are $35 for an individual show, $75 for a season ticket, or $65 for early bird tickets. Trick-or-Treat

The Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department will hold its Trick-or-Treat the Trails from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at White Deer Park, 2400 Aversboro Road, Garner. The department is seeking sponsors to set up tables along the trail and distribute treats. Email kmayes@garnernc.gov for more information.

Movie on the lawn

Johnston Community College will host a screening of “Godzilla” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at 245 College Road, Smithfield. Games and activities will run from 5 to 8 p.m., with a rain location in the Tart Building. Admission, popcorn and face painting are all free.

Veterans Day celebration

The Town of Garner and Garner Veterans Memorial Committee will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Aversboro Road Baptist Church, 1600 Aversboro Road. The Garner Magnet High School Symphonic Band will hold a patriotic mini-concert at 10:30 a.m. Major General Todd Kelly, Air National Guard Assistant to the Commander, Air Mobility Command, will speak.

NARFE meeting

The Johnston County chapter of the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Golden Corral at 1932 E. Market St., Smithfield. Paul Brown will speak on the 2014 N.C. tax laws and their impacts on retirees.

Auditions open

Auditions for the 2015 Garner Showcase of Talent will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Garner Performing Arts Center, 742 W. Garner Road. For details, visit garnerperformingartscenter.com or call Debbie Dunn at 919-661-6972. Registration is required by Nov. 10.

Al-Anon

Al-Anon meets from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday nights at Showers of Blessing Community Church, 10 Technology Drive, Garner. Al-Anon is a support group for friends and family of those struggling with substance addiction.

Garner Senior Golfers

Men and women 55 years and older are invited to join Garner Senior Golfers each Tuesday morning at local golf courses for a round of golf and fellowship. Call Jerry Hargis at 919-772-7904 for more information.

Aversboro Run Club

Aversboro Run Club meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday outside Aversboro Restaurant & Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. The club is open to every runner and walker, and runs set routes of 3, 4 and 5 miles covering many paces. The restaurant offers food and drink specials to all walkers and runners upon return.

Food pantry

A food pantry is open from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 1082 Amelia Church Road, Clayton. The food is free to anyone presenting an ID card. For more information, call 919-934-0213.

Parenting workshops

Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.

•  Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.



•  The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
