Auditions in Clayton

Auditions for “Anatomy of Gray” are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 21 and 10 a.m. Nov. 22 at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. The Clayton Youth Theater production is open to students in grades 7-12. For more information, visit claytonyouththeater.com.

Printmaking at JCC

Prints by Brian Gonzales and Raj Bunnag of Supergraphics printmaking center in Durham are on display in the Frank Creech Art Gallery at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield. The two will demonstrate and talk about printmaking methods from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the college.

Art in Garner

Works by Kathleen Nobles and Janie Prete are on display through Nov. 30 at the Garner Performing Arts Center, 742 W. Garner Road, Garner. Both artists are members of Clayton Visual Arts.

‘Clay Exploration’

“Clay Exploration,” a class for people 16 and older, will begin Nov. 19 at the Clayton Community Center, 715 Amelia Church Road, Clayton. The class will meet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays for eight weeks. Students will use hand-building techniques and the wheel to create functional and decorative pieces. The cost is $85 for Clayton residents and $100 for nonresidents. The cost of clay is $15. The class will not meet Dec. 24 and 31. For more information, call 919-553-1550.

‘Totally Clay’

“Totally Clay,” a class for young people ages 13-18, will begin Nov. 13 at the Clayton Community Center, 715 Amelia Church Road, Clayton. The class will meet from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursdays for seven weeks. Students will use hand-building techniques and the wheel to create functional and decorative pieces. Art on display

Works by Lisa Bailey of Clayton and Martha Connolly of Wendell are on display through Dec. 1 at The Clayton, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. The exhibit is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Children’s author

Johnston Community College will host children’s author and illustrator Denise Fleming at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in Room 1630 of the Public Safety Building on the Smithfield campus, 245 College Road. Admission is free.

Fleming is the author and illustrator of 20 picture books, including “In the Small, Small Pond,” which earned a Caldecott Honor Award, the highest honor in children’s illustrated literature. Her books have garnered numerous additional honors and awards.

Performing arts in Clayton

Here’s the remaining schedule for the 2014-15 performing-arts series in Clayton.

Saturday, Dec. 6 – Riders in the Sky. Tickets are $28.

Friday, Jan. 23 – storyteller Jeanne Robertson. Tickets are $30.

Friday, March 20 – “Yesterday & Today: The Interactive Beatles’ Experience.” Tickets to this all-request concert are $25.

Saturday, April 11 – Jeremy Davis & The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra. Tickets are $30.

The Clayton Center will also present native sons the Malpass Brothers, who hail from Goldsboro, in a special event on Saturday, Feb. 7. Tickets are $20.

JCC concert series

Here are the remaining shows in the 25th anniversary concert series at Johnston Community College.

Pianist Emile Pandolfi with vocalist Dana Russell – 7 p.m. Jan. 23. The two will perform popular standards and Broadway hits. Tickets are $23.50 in advance and $25 at the door.

Charlotte’s Web – 1 p.m. March 7. Theatreworks USA will present the popular children’s story. Tickets are $13.50 in advance and $15 at the door.

Art class for children

Doodlebugs, a weekly art class for children ages 18 months to 4 years, has resumed at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 Booker Dairy Road, Smithfield. In sessions at 10 a.m. Friday, children experiment with dough, paper, watercolors, glue and more. For Smithfield residents, the cost is $5 per session or $19 for four sessions. For nonresidents, the costs are $7 and $27, respectively. Register two days in advance by calling 919-934-1408.
