Democratic Women meet
The Democratic Women of Johnston County will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in the fellowship hall at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, 218 S. Second St., Smithfield. A guest speaker from Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action will speak about the organization, weatherization and energy-saving tips.
Civil War 150
Throughout November, Wake County Public Libraries will offer Civil War 150, a program series commemorating the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. Wake County’s six regional libraries will offer programs on a variety of topics ranging from Civil War genealogy, to life on the homefront and great books about the Civil War. From 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, Southeast Regional Library will offer a culminating event featuring a program on Wake County and the Civil War presented by Ernest Dollar, director of the City of Raleigh Museum.
Cancer benefit holiday mall
The Tailored Pearl will host a pediatric cancer benefit and holiday mall from 2 to 8 p.m. with a VIP hour from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Academy for the Performing Arts, 844 Perry Road, Apex. A portion of the proceeds will go to Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a foundation for childhood cancer research and treatment. For details, go to alexslemonade.org.
The Eagleridge Crafters Group will host a craft fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the club house at 565 Competition Road, Raleigh. There will be quilts, handmade note cards, ornaments, florals, American Girl doll clothes, wreaths, wood items and more. Lunch and snacks can be purchased on site.
The Town of Garner will accept applications for the annual Christmas parade through Friday, Nov. 14. The parade will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, in downtown Garner. This year’s parade theme is “Santa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” and will celebrate the joy of giving in conjunction with a Toys for Tots drive at all Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources offices through November. Al-Anon meets from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday nights at Showers of Blessing Community Church, 10 Technology Drive, Garner. Al-Anon is a support group for friends and family of those struggling with substance addiction.
Garner Senior Golfers

Aversboro Run Club
Aversboro Run Club meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday outside Aversboro Restaurant & Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. The club is open to every runner and walker, and runs set routes of 3, 4 and 5 miles covering many paces. The restaurant offers food and drink specials to all walkers and runners upon return.
A food pantry is open from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 1082 Amelia Church Road, Clayton. The food is free to anyone presenting an ID card. For more information, call 919-934-0213.
Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.
• Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
• The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
