JCC celebrates black history

Several events will be held at Johnston Community College in celebration of black history. The events will be held at the Paul A. •  The Black Business Expo will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18.



•  The 2015 Gospel Fest will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22. This event is free.



Garner Senior Center talk

Haley Gray, Certified Senior Advisor with Extension of You Home Care, will talk about “Getting the Most Out of Your Doctor Visits” at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 at the Garner Senior Center, 205 E. Pancake dinner

Cub Scouts Pack 10 will host a pancake dinner fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Holland’s United Methodist Church, 9433 Ten-Ten Road, Raleigh. Dinners are $5 per adult and $3 per child younger than 12.

The Vietnam Experience

Veterans and their families are invited to a Lunch and Learn event at noon Friday, Feb. 20 at Logan's Roadhouse, 1000 Timber Dr. East, Garner. The event is an opportunity to learn about the benefits available to veterans. Reverse raffle

The Archer Lodge Community Center will host a reverse raffle Friday, Feb. 27, at 14009 Buffalo Road, Clayton. The grand prize will be $10,000. Tickets are $100 and come with two meals. For details, go to ArcherLodge.org.

Art reception

An artists’ reception for the African-American Women art exhibit will be on display from 2 to 4 p.m. through Feb. 28 in the front lobby of the Garner Performing Arts Center, 742 W. Garner Road. The exhibit showcases the art of LeGrant Taylor, Eric McRay, Shawn Etheridge, FRANCO, Jermaine Powell, Delvecchio Faison and Jaylan Rhea. For details, call 919-661-4602.

Garner 101 Citizens Academy

Garner residents are invited to enroll in the spring 2015 Garner 101 Citizens Academy beginning March 5 and culminating with a graduation dinner and ceremony on May 14. Garner 101 is a series of weekly classes designed to teach residents about Garner government. Enrollment is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Southeast Regional Library events

Southeast Regional Library hosts free and inexpensive events to help educate local residents and promote literacy at 908 7th Ave., Garner. For details, go to WakeGov.com/libraries.

•  6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 24: Learn to set up your business accounting the right way the first time with Raleigh SCORE. Learn basic accounting principles, explore features of QuickBooks and discover how to record basic transactions.



Garner Senior Golfers

Men and women 55 years and older are invited to join Garner Senior Golfers each Tuesday morning at local golf courses for a round of golf and fellowship. Call Jerry Hargis at 919-772-7904 for more information.

Aversboro Run Club

Aversboro Run Club meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday outside Aversboro Restaurant & Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. The club is open to every runner and walker, and runs set routes of 3, 4 and 5 miles covering many paces. The restaurant offers food and drink specials to all walkers and runners upon return.

Food pantry

A food pantry is open from 9 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 1082 Amelia Church Road, Clayton. The food is free to anyone presenting an ID card. For more information, call 919-934-0213.

Parenting workshops

Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.

Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.

The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.

Classic Car Club meets

TOPS Chapter 0678

Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Chapter 0678 meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at The Garner Senior Center, 205 E. Garner Rd., Garner. The purpose of the group is to provide support, share information about healthy living and celebrate success with weight loss. Participants must pay $32 for yearly national dues and $3 monthly local dues.

Overeaters Anonymous
