Car show

The annual Food Lion car show fundraiser to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is noon-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at 50 Neuse River Parkway, Clayton. The event features classic and show cars and vendors. The entry fee is $20. For information, call 919-550-2476.

Theater in Garner

The summer youth theater camp run by the Towne Players of Garner finishes this year with a production of Disney’s “Mulan Jr.” 8 p.m. Aug. 8-10. There is also a matinee performance at 2 p.m. Aug. 10, at Garner Performing Arts Center, 742 W. Garner Road. Tickets at the door are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. Parenting workshops

The Partnership for Children of Johnston County is offering two programs for parents with young children.

•  “Motherread,” is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.

•  The Incredible Years Parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks, where participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.

Library programs

Southeast Regional Library has an extensive list of activities for the family in July and August, including several programs highlighting American music and artwork. Bassoonist John Pedersen will perform at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29. Pedersen’s performance is part of the North Carolina Symphony’s Instrument Zoo series for young children. All programs are free. Car seat safety checks

Trained staff members from Wake County Human Services will make safety checks on child car seats 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, in the parking lot at the Southeast Regional Library.

Boathouse opens

The Lake Benson boathouse is open for the season at 975 Buffaloe Road, Garner. Hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays, and noon-7 p.m. Sundays. Boat rentals start at $4 an hour. No private boats are allowed. Free fishing is available from the dock. Call Stephanie Shaffer at 919-661-6892 or visit
