Self defense seminar

Family Fun Day
The Child Collaborative in partnership with Johnston County Mental Health will host a Healthy Minds, Healthy Lives Family Fun Day from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the Johnston Medical Mall on North Bright Leaf Boulevard. May is Mental Health Awareness month. This free event will include children’s games and activities, an art contest, variety of vendors and free food. Blast from the Past
The Johnston County Chorale’s spring musical, “Blast from the Past,” will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. The show will include music from the 50’s, 60’s, Motown, country, gospel, and more. Also featured will be the Johnston County Chorale Jazz Ensemble, Rendance Company Cloggers, and the Knightdale High School Gospel Choir. The inaugural Crawfish Festival will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Aversboro Restaurant and Sports Bar, 1411 Aversboro Road, Garner. Proceeds from the festival will go to charities such as the N.C. Food Bank, ARC of Wake County, Pediatric Cancer, Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Free HRD class
A fee-waived HRD class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 20-29, at Johnston Community College’s main campus in Smithfield. The 16-hour class will be free for those who are unemployed or underemployed; otherwise it is $70. The class will focus on general job requirements, necessary skills and responsibilities of the personal and home care professional, as well as a layman’s CPR class. Partnership for Children of Johnston County offers two programs for parents with young children.
• Motheread is a 12-week self-paced program that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues.
• The Incredible Years parent program offers weekly group sessions for 14 to 16 weeks. Participants practice skills to promote children’s academic, social and emotional skills.
