Yuri Hoggard enlists in Navy

Yuri C. Hoggard has enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program. He is a 2007 graduate of Garner High School

The program allows recruits to enter the Navy and take up to one year to complete prior commitments such as high school.

Hoggard will undergo basic training at the Navy’s Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.

Honors for Garner citizens

The Martin Luther King Annual Celebration Committee has honored two Garner citizens with The Dream in Action Award, in recognition of outstanding service to benefit of others. The award went to Joyce Cooper, director of Garner Area Ministries, Henry Holbrook, who volunteers in the Meals on Wheels program based at the Garner Senior Center.

Army trains Jonathan Newkirk

Army Pvt. Jonathan B. Newkirk has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Sandra Newkirk of Gin Street, and grandson of Charlene Newkirk of Auburn Road, both of Raleigh.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Newkirk is a 2011 graduate of Garner Magnet High School.
