Ice cream social, breakfast

An ice cream social is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Cold Stone Creamery, 164 Shenstone Blvd., Garner. Proceeds will benefit the Garner Relay for Life.

Also, a fundraising breakfast is scheduled from 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Friday, April 12, at the Garner Town Hall on Seventh Avenue.

Lions Club sale

The Garner Lions Club will sell brooms from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at the Garner Lions Club Building, 305 Main St., Garner. The brooms start at $6 and were handmade by visually impaired employees of Industries of the Blind in Greensboro. Also on April 20, the Lions Club will sell gift certificates to Autobell Full Service Car Wash for $14.95. Proceeds will benefit the Humanitarian/White Cane Drive to help visually-impaired citizens of Garner. For more information, call 919-906-4737.

‘Imogene’s Last Stand’

The Raleigh Little Theatre will present “Imogene’s Last Stand” at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Southeast Regional Library, 908 Seventh Ave., Garner. Admission is free for school-age children. For more information, call 919-662-2250.

Document shredding in Garner

A professional paper-shredding company will be on site from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2100 Buffaloe Road, Garner. World Book Night

Wake County libraries will take part in National World Book Night on Tuesday, April 23. Librarians will distribute free, popular titles through restaurants, coffee shops and community gathering places. For more information about local distribution, email Katrina Vernon at

Teen Poetry Contest

Wake County libraries’ annual Teen Poetry Contest will run through April 30. Students in grades 6-12 are invited to submit as many as three original poems. A winner will be chosen in each of four categories: sixth grade, seventh-eighth grade, ninth-10th grade and 11th-12th grade. Winners will be announced in early May. Wake County parks

Wake County parks will offer the following programs this month:

Star Party – 9-11 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Harris Lake County Park, 2112 County Park Drive, New Hill. View the night sky through binoculars. Bring a blanket or chair. The fee is $5 per family or $3 per person. Registration is required two days in advance. To register, call 919-387-4342.

Night Ride at American Tobacco Trail – 8-10 p.m. Friday, April 26, at the American Tobacco Trail, 1309 New Hill-Olive Chapel Road, New Hill. Songbird Celebration – 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Blue Jay Point County Park, 3200 Pleasant Union Church Road, Raleigh. Celebrate the arrival of migratory songbirds at a free festival that includes hiking, games and activities. For more information, go to or call 919-870-4330.

Family Fishing Fun – 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Historic Yates Mill County Park, 4620 Lake Wheeler Road, Raleigh. Learn to fish the old-fashioned way. Cane poles, tackle and bait will be provided. The program is for children 5 and older, with an accompanying adult. The fee is $5 per family or $3 per person. Registration is required. Benefit barbecue

American Legion Riders Post 232 will sell barbecue plates from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10225, 1706 W. Garner Road, Garner. Lake Benson boathouse opens

The Lake Benson boathouse has opened for the season at 975 Buffaloe Road, Garner. Hours are noon-7 p.m. Fridays, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays and noon- 7 p.m. Sundays. It will be closed on Fridays in July and August. Boat rentals start at $4 an hour. No private boats are allowed. Free fishing is available from the dock. Spring Big Sweep

Join volunteers in cleaning Lake Benson’s shoreline and the streets of Garner from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20. Volunteers should meet at the White Deer Park Nature Center, 2400 Aversboro Road, Garner. They will receive breakfast and a T-shirt or tote bag. Registration is required. Run for Our Heroes

The Run for Our Heroes 5k Run/Walk is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27, on Nash Square in the 200 block of West Hargett Street in Raleigh. The annual event honors the eight Raleigh police officers who have died in the line of duty. A post-race social will be held at Napper Tandy’s, with free food for all race participants.
