Flapjack fundraiser

A pancake breakfast is scheduled 8-10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Applebee’s, 1165 U.S. 70 West, Garner. The cost is $7, with proceeds going to American Legion Post 232 in Garner. For more information, call 919-661-9505.

Relay fundraisers

The following fundraisers will benefit the Garner Relay for Life:

Barbecued chicken – Plates of barbecued chicken will be on sale noon-2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at First Presbyterian Church of Garner, 503 Lakeside Drive. The plates will include barbecued chicken, potatoes, green beans, corn on the cob, rolls, dessert and a drink. Adults plates: $8; children 12 and under: $3. For more information, call 919-772-0727.

Chili’s fundraiser – 11 a.m.-1 p.m. April 22, bring a Relay for Life fundraiser flyer into Chili’s and 10 percent of the sales will go to the Relay for Life. Chili’s is located at 115 Carillon Drive, Garner. For more information, call 919-771-1700.

Moe’s fundraiser – Southern Trace Friends will hold a fundraiser 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Moe’s Southwest Grill, 168 Shenstone Blvd., Garner. Place a meal receipt in the box at the register and 20 percent of the tab will go to the Relay for Life. For more information, call 919-779-0311.

Flowers for a Year – Relay team Southern Trace Friends is selling flowers. The cost is $20 and includes 12 bouquets, one per month. Bouquets can be upgraded for $5. World Book Night

Wake County libraries will take part in National World Book Night on Tuesday, April 23. Librarians will distribute free, popular titles through restaurants, coffee shops and community gathering places. Among the titles to be distributed are “Good Omens” by Neil Gaiman and “Montana Sky” by Nora Roberts. Document shredding

A professional paper-shredding company will be on-site 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2100 Buffaloe Road, Garner. The church will accept donations for the service, with proceeds going to its ministries. For more information, call 919-772-9044 or 919-662-5493.

Blood drive

Boathouse opens

The Lake Benson boathouse has opened for the season at 975 Buffaloe Road, Garner. Hours are noon-7 p.m. Fridays, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays and noon- 7 p.m. Sundays. It will be closed on Fridays in July and August. Boat rentals start at $4 an hour. No private boats are allowed. Free fishing is available from the dock. Overeaters Anonymous

Teen Poetry Contest

Wake County libraries’ annual Teen Poetry Contest will run through April 30. Students in grades 6-12 are invited to submit as many as three original poems. A winner will be chosen in each of four categories: sixth grade, seventh-eighth grade, ninth-10th grade and 11th-12th grade. Horses for Hope

The Wake County League of Women Voters will meet at noon Friday, April 26, at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough St., Raleigh. Aviation camps

Middle and high school students can learn about aviation and aviation-related job opportunities at Aviation Career Education academies in Raleigh. A camp for students in grades 7-9 will run July 15-19, and a camp for students in grades 10-12 will be held June 17-21. Both will be at Leesville Road High School, 8409 Leesville Road. Students will learn about the theory of flight, aviation history, aircraft maintenance and aviation principles. Attendees will also take field trips, fly radio-controlled aircraft and have the opportunity to fly in a plane. The cost is $150 per student. The registration deadline is Friday, May 10. Book sale in Raleigh

Wake County public libraries will hold their annual Book sale and Festival of Reading May 9-12 in the Jim Graham Building on the N.C. State Fairgrounds, 1025 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh. The book sale will run 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Saturday will also feature family-friendly activities and entertainment.
