Movie night

The Chick-fil-A 3 Little Pigs Triathlon is 7:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 Booker Dairy Road. The competition includes a 250-yard pool swim, 14-mile bike, and 3.1-mile run. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Park and the Rotary Club of Central Johnston County. Football and cheerleading leagues

Registration for Pop Warner football and cheerleading season for children 5-15 years old is 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18 at the Garner Civitan Building, 1005 Poole Road, Garner. Tutor training

The Literacy Council of Wake County needs volunteers to tutor adults readers. The council offers tutor training workshops for volunteers 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. July 15, 17, 22, and 24, at 916 West Morgan St. Raleigh. Volunteers must attend all four sessions. Family Fun Day

The Archer Lodge Community Center is hosting its annual Family Fun Day and Independence Day celebration 7 p.m. Friday, June 28 and 6:30a.m.-9:15 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the corner of Archer Lodge and Buffalo Road in Archer Lodge.

Featured highlights on Friday include the crowning of Little Miss Archer Lodge 2013 and the barbecue pig cookoff. Activities start early on Saturday, with a road race and a patriotic parade, concessions all day and inflatables, corn hole tournament, bingo and cakewalk.

The center will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a patriotic ceremony that honors local veterans and features the Army Ground Forces Band. For more information, visit

Town of Garner seeks volunteers

The Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department needs volunteers for its Independence Day celebration Wednesday, July 3, at Lake Benson Park, 921 Buffaloe Road, Garner. Volunteers are needed to help in setup, cleanup, arts and crafts, and games. Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. They will receive a free T-shirt and meal. Band concert

The 440th Army Band will be in concert 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium, 245 College Road, Smithfield. The free concert is in honor of Independence Day. Donations will be accepted to benefit the performing arts programs at JCC.

Boathouse opens

The Lake Benson boathouse has opened for the season at 975 Buffaloe Road, Garner. Hours are noon-7 p.m. Fridays, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays and noon- 7 p.m. Sundays. It will be closed on Fridays in July and August. Boat rentals start at $4 an hour. No private boats are allowed. Free fishing is available from the dock. Summer camps

Design a video game or create a website. Learn what it’s like to run a business.

Lunch bunch concert

The annual music for the lunch bunch series is 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, with a violin and cello performance by Sherry Lattin and Lisa Ferebee at First Presbyterian Church, 215 S. Third St., Smithfield.
