The Garner Educational Foundation thanked its community volunteers during the annual luncheon for Schools and Community Organized to Read, or SCOR
The GEF for more than 15 years has organized community members to volunteer 30 minutes each week to read with a second-grader in one of the eight elementary schools the foundation supports.
The SCOR program for this school year had 57 volunteers who read with 66 second graders. Before the school year ends, the volunteers plan to present their SCOR buddies with age-appropriate dictionaries provided by the GEF.
Many of the program’s helpers come from the Town of Garner and the Garner Police Department, the local Optimist Club and Civitan Club, Hollands United Methodist Church and Aversboro Road Baptist Church.
